Climate

The whole of Northern Ireland has temperate maritime climate. Cloud cover is the typical feature across the country. Average daytime maximums are 6,5°C in January and 17,5°C in July. The damp climate is one of the reasons that much of the region is covered in rich green grassland.

Flora and Fauna

Northern Ireland has less diverse animal and plant species than either Great Britain or mainland Europe. There are 55 mammal species but only 26 of them are considered native to Ireland. Some species as red fox, hedgehog and badger are very common, whereas others, like the Irish hare, red deer and pine marten are less so.

There are many species of wild-flower. A wild furze is commonly found growing in the uplands.

It is home to hundreds of plant species, some of them unique to the island, but some grasses cover the country, for example Spartina Anglica.

There are a lot of species of algae and seaweeds. But they are represented by the cold-temperate variety. The total number of species is more than five hundred.
