Population

The population of Northern Ireland is about 1,8 million people. People from Northern Ireland, part of the United Kingdom, are British citizens. They are also entitled to Irish citizenship by birth under the 1998 Belfast Agreement between the British and Irish Governments which provides that: it is the birthright of all the people of Northern Ireland to identify themselves and be accepted as Irish or British, or both, and it would not be affected by any future change in the status of Northern Ireland.

Traditions and Events

August Craft Month is an annual programme of events that showcase works of craft makers in Northern Ireland and from across the United Kingdom, Ireland and Europe. It is organized by Craft Northern Ireland.

Saint Patrick's Day

Saint Patrick's Day is a cultural and a religious holiday celebrated on 17 March. It is celebrated in the memory of Saint Patrick, the most commonly recognised of the patron saints of Ireland, and the arrival of Christianity in Ireland.

Celebrations to mark the anniversary of the battle of the Boyne are held every twelfth of July and draw huge crowds. It was the battle between the Catholic King James and the Protestant King William. King William won and nowadays Protestants remember it as the great victory over Catholics that resulted in sovereignty of Parliament and the Protestant  monarchy.

Queens University hosts the annual international Belfast Festival. The Festival covers all art forms including theatre, dance, classical music, literature, jazz, comedy, visual arts, folk music and popular music, and attracting over 50,000 visitors, making it the largest of its kind in Ireland.
