Geography

Northern Ireland is one of the four countries of the United Kingdom. It is situated in the northeast of the island of Ireland. The capital-city is Belfast. Northern Ireland is washed by the Atlantic Ocean, the Irish Sea and the North Channel.

Counties

Northern Ireland consists of 6 historic counties: county Antrim, county Armagh, county Down, county Fermanagh, county Londonderry, county Tyrone. These counties are no longer used for local government purposes. Their names are printed on information pages in English and Irish passports. Nowadays Northern Ireland is divided into 26 districts.

Lakes and Rivers

Lough Neagh, the largest freshwater lake of Ireland and in the British isles, is situated in the central part of Northern Ireland. Another lakes, Lower Lough Erne and Upper Lough Erne are in the southwest of the country. The largest rivers are River Bann, River Foyle, River Blackwater and River Moume.

 

Symbols

The official flag is the Union Flag. The former Northern Ireland flag had no official status since 1972. It is used by the Northern Ireland Football Team.

The floral logo is based on the flax plant.

The emblem of the country is the shamrock.
